Project Overview

Assess the opportunities and limitations of current phone applications and design an interactive experience that can (eventually) be deployed on the device. Identify a real need or problem people experience that has not yet been addressed or deployed on a device application.

Product Description

Homie is an application designed to make moving from one home space to another easier. Homie was inspired by the lack of customization current home design apps have to offer. Homie provides the ability for its user to provide custom room and furniture dimensions to better prepare for the spacial adjustments in your next home.

Skills Utilized

Research Methods (primary and secondary), Navigating Databases, Human Testing, HCI, Data Interpretation

Process

Our team's approach followed a very iterative design process. We started with several rough sketches and prototypes before developing our rough wireframe design. We used AdobeXD to develop a prototype and to conduct user testing. We gave our users four tasks to complete and recorded their feedback in a short survey about their experience with our rough prototype. These instructions were:

  1. Create a new account and login.

  2. Browse furniture and choose a bed and a dresser you like. Add them to your wish list.

  3. Create a new design project through the ‘draw dimensions’ option.

  4. Place your bed and dresser into your room; change its placement from one wall to another at least once.

  5. Use the drop-down menu to change the current screen.

We had the users screen record their interactions therefore we could record their number of mistakes with each task and notes about them. In our follow-up survey we asked which task they thought was easiest and which task they thought was hardest and why. We also asked them to rate each task by difficulty. The quantitative results were as follows,

From these results we discovered a few problems with our prototype that needed immediate attention. These problems and respective solutions were:

Finally, we made the necessary changes to have our prototype operate more efficiently and more functionally. We spent the next couple of weeks simply improving our wireframe and making a more high fidelity prototype. We were overall very satisfied in our prototype giving its user complete customization, ability to incorporate the furniture they currently have, as well as shop for new furniture and envision their new space.
